This looks like either a permissions problem or a full disk to me.
I'm not sure about the make_catalog_backup script because my version is
quite a bit modified by now.
What I'd do in your situation is
- first check disk space
- then verify the permissions
- finally, run the make_catalog_backup script and bsmtp from the shell
and observe. Make sure to run these scripts as the bacula user.
