The DIR and the FD communicate, too. There is some sort of a

That communication is obviously initiated by the DIR, I guess?
Have you tried the Hearbeat interval setting in the configurations of
all involved servers?
I'd tweak the timeout setting in the firewall and use a heartbeat
setting in the daemons. You've got to find the right combination of
settings for your environment, but that shouldn't be really hard.
Thanks, for now I'm quite sure I had seen also this option in the
documentation some day in my previous life... but for "some reason"
I had no idea about it yesterday ;-)
So, I obviously need to add line(s) like
Heartbeat Interval = 60
to somewhere, if I want to make sure there is something happening in the
connection every minute.
Yes, that sounds about right...
Client/File daemon configuration in manual says:
...
Storage daemon configuration in manual in turn says:
...
So, if I put one such a line into the FileDaemon resource in the file
bacula-fd.conf in the clients that are located behind the firewall, should
it cover all other cases but the delay caused by the SD waiting for the
operator to change the tape?
And to cover the latter situation (tape change), a similar line into the
Storage Resource of the file bacula-sd.conf?
Or did I once again mess something?
I wouldn't know because I never had to work around these problems :-)
Anyway, if we trust the manual, setting this in the FD and the SD conf
should handle all cases of possible timeouts, right.
Arno

Timo
