hi, I have been wanting to deploy Bacula onto live Production environment. I have been checking/working out the basic features of Bacula and they seem to match my requirements to a great extent.
The scenario looks like : I am looking to backup data on clients laptops/desktops. These machines run primarily Windows (XP/2000). I am looking to install WinBacula out here. The Bacula-Director would run on a Linux Server running RedHatEL 3. Initially, the total number of clients is about 15. But this number will definitely grow, real quick. However, I have some things playing up in my head like : (1) Bacula can backup data in three ways i.e. full, incremental or deferential. If any file is modified, the complete file will be backed-up. If we take an example of a .PST file (Microsoft Outlook Mail File) which is normally of 300-400mb in size, is updated, the full file will be backed-up over the wire. If we consider 10 clients, than it would backup around 3-4gb at the same instant. Would this not increase data traffic considerably over the wire ? If this is true, is there any way to reduce/control this ? (2) Is there any limit on the number of users that Bacula can support ? (2) I have read about Bacula's support for VSS, which allows to backup files that are currently being used by an application. Can i use this feature with Bacula version 1.36.3 ? I remember having read that version 1.37 supports it. i need to use this feature. Is 1.37 stable enough to deploy in a live production environment ? I c immense potential with Bacula. So, I am pushing for Bacula as against other Commercial Network backup solutions out here. It would be great if somebody can help me clear out my doubts.
