Dear Paul, When performing a job, the file daemon (FD) connects _directly_ to the storage daemon (SD). This is different from the console which performs status requests via the director daemon (DIR).
This can cause confusion when setting up firewalls and making sure ports are open. You need to make sure that your firewall allows a connection initiated by the FD to the SD. Otherwise your job will fail. Also make sure that the hostnames of the SD and FD are correctly resolvable from each machine. Try running a traceroute to see if the server's can actually be reached (as long as that is permitted by the firewalls).
