When I started using barcode labels I erased all tapes (with mt commands) and the wrote new bacula labes on them using "label barcode". also removed the old tapes from the catalog (or changed them to not recycle).
if you want a mixed setup you can keep using "update slots scan", once the barcodes work you can use "update slots" instead after changeing tapes. good luck!
