Hej,

I'd like to build a schedule for the following scenario:

- 3 tapes for a full backup once a week (WEEKLY), say friday evening
- 2 tapes each for incremental backups of one week (DAILY); e.g. monday
to thursday evening

The DAILYs should be changed every week, not regarding the number jobs
that are already written on them. I mean it should not matter if all
jobs worked fine in the previous week.

I already got a schedule to do this, but the problem is that if one job
failes in the previous week and the "max volume job = 4" the tape from
the previous week is required for the following monday as well.

Is there a possibility to solve this problem on a just "changing
week-by-week"-base, or do I have to write a schedule for every week of
the year?

It's probably better to use the "Volume Use Duration" setting in the
pool definition (and update your existing tapes...). If you set this to,
for example, 6 days, when the first job per tape starts on monday
evening, the tape will not be used after saturday evening.

Thanks for any answer,

This becomes a FAQ, I think. We should take Phil's detailed answer and
put it into the manual. :-)

Thanks for your input. I didn't mention that I used this option already,
but the disadvantage is that e.g. the first three backups (mon.-wed.) in
a week fail, then the daily-schedule is completely wasted. This means
that the tape will get not only required on thursday, but also on the
next monday. So the schedule doesn't fit anymore for a complete week.
This is not as failure-resistant as I would wish it to be.

Is there any other possibility to solve this?

I didn't mention it, but you should use two pools. One for the weekly full backups with volume use duration set, and one for the daily jobs which probably can cycle without any intervention or replacement. Setting the retention so that you've always got a usable tape should be possible, though.

Having two pools in one autochanger can be a little difficult, though - 1.38 should fix that, and I think with tapes 1.37 is stable enough by now.
