In addition to the nice answers that you got, you might want to take a look at 
the end of the restore chapter in the development manual (1.37.32) that is on 
the web site.  I've tried to add the steps one would take in all possible 
different situations for recovering file -- it is still under development, so 
any feedback or questions would be appreciated.
