I'm in the process of evaluating Bacula for possible Amanda replacement.
I have only a Qualstar changer with one tape drive at my disposal. I
would like for Bacula and Amanda to share the changer and drive. Amanda
uses 30 slots in the magazine of 33 slots, so there are 3 free slots. My
idea is to add three tapes in those slots and have Bacula label them as
its own. Will Bacula leave the other 30 tapes alone?

I ask because I've been discovering that several of my Amanda tapes have
been corrupted lately. By corrupted I mean that their Amanda labels in
the first block of the tape are no longer readable, rendering the tape
useless to Amanda. My initial suspicion was that somehow Bacula had
rewritten the labels on those tapes. I can simply have Amanda rewrite the
label on them and they worked fine with Amanda once again. However, I've
been unable to find where or how Bacula is doing this if it did do it. I
also don't think that Bacula would try to do something that destructive
without asking/warning first.

Would Bacula do something like try to label a tape just because it's in
the changer? I did not issue the Bacula command which labels all the
tapes with their barcodes, and this corruption only affected a subset of
the Amanda tapes. Just looking for general strategy tips to get them to
co-exist for a month or two while I decide if I should convert to Bacula
in this setup.

Thanks,
Fran
