This issue has already been discussed, I just wanted to point out an
assumption I don't agree with.

This is a bad assumption.  During a restore, you will be able to read
0 to all of the tape, with varying levels in between.  Generally you
will read all the tape, but there are times when a tape fails partway
through, and other times when just a few blocks are lost, but you can
continue reading farther on.  So in my mind, saving data TWICE to a
tape is ok, but more is probably not worth it.
