Hello,

I have four things that I would like to bring up:

1. Where we are for version 1.37 -> 1.38
2. Where we are going in the next version (1.39 development to be released as
    1.40).
3. Call for technical help ($$$$)
4. Personal request

1. Where we are for version 1.37 -> 1.38
Bacula 1.37 is coming along slowly but progressing. I have the following
remaining things to do before release (probably in the order given):
1. Fix the remaining bugs that I am aware of and new ones that come up
    during testing.
2. Test more (it is in full production here).
3. Document all the new features (about half done).
4. Finish up the implementation of TLS (gnome console, and wx-console)
   and test it.
5. Remove old spool files on startup of the SD.
6. Build and test the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) for Win32.
7. Write a bacula-web document
8. Take one more try at making DVD writing work.
9. Run the regression scripts on Solaris and FreeBSD

If all goes well, I will release 1.38.0 sometime in August -- probably toward
the end.
========================

2. Where we are going in the next version (1.39 ->1.40).
I've decided that all future release will be much smaller releases than 1.37
has been. This will allow me to make simpler incremental releases rather than
one giant release with a lot of features.

In addition, there are a number of important things that I have wanted to
implement for some time and have not done so because there were desires and
needs in other areas. I have not decided exactly what features I will add,
but they will probably be the following:
1. Reorganize the stream naming system (one important field that goes on the
    tape). This will allow us to easily add new compression schemes or
    encryption without doubling and quadrupling the number of streams (data
    types).
2. Implement Base backups
3. Implement the ability to efficiently handle *huge* exclusion lists (i.e.
   exclude hundreds of thousands of files).
4. Implement more efficient handling of large numbers of hard links.
5. Implement a Qt console and deprecate the gnome console.
===========================

3. Call for technical help ($$$$)
A user has requested implementation of data encryption. I have referred him to
Landon Fuller who did the TLS implementation. Obviously Landon has first
choice at this point, but if anyone else knows about data encryption with
OpenSSL and feels competent to add it to Bacula (not easy), please contact
me. The user is willing to pay for the work, and it is a feature I want (will
do myself if no one else is going to do it).
=================================

4. Personal request
A year and a half ago, I decided that I was going to learn German (in the next
10 years), but have made zero progress since. I'll be taking an intensive
German course in October, and would like to spend a week of "vacation" in
Southern Germany in the first or second week of December. I imagine that we
will be going to Munich, but nothing is fixed. The request is that I would
like to meet and discuss with any of you who are in that area -- in German if
at all possible, and I would also like to get Internet access. This could be
fun, and at the same time a German learning experience for me, and hopefully
a bit of touristic things for my wife who will accompany me (she speaks a
little German, but not much).

Best regards,

Kern
