Ok, once more...

Good evening,

Does anyone have experience with tapes that do not let you change the blocksize (I can't set block size to 0 (variable))

I'm using and old QIC drive and had to try which block sizes worked.
Interestingly, I found that the block sizes I can use vary depending on
what SCSI HBA it's connected to.

IIRC, an NCR810 allowed 16k blocks to be used, while I now use that
drive with an Adaptec 2940 with 1k blocks.

The solution was to leave the OS/driver block size untouched, and set
the storage daemon to the proper block size. It ususally reports (in
status output) blocks of 1024 or 1023 bytes. I assume that the
discrepancy is purely cosmetic. Or bacula actually uses different block
sizes and everything still works - I never verified this.

I do know, though, that backup and restore work correctly, and the
regular capacity of the tapes is used.

Now, considering your problem:
Have you looked for a firmware update for the drive? This might help a
lot, if Sony gives that sort of support.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you try leaving the block size untouched with mt
and instead try different block size settings only in the SD. You should
probably start with what tapeinfo reports, or try the "usual suspects" -
1, 2, 4, 8, 16k and so on.

Arno

Thanks,
