If "Accept Any Volume" is set to 'yes' for your pool then it will
probably accept any volume that has an "Append" status. If I remember
correctly you can even see which volume is required next by running
"status director" in the bconsole - it should be printed on the same
line as the next scheduled job.

I do not have a robot here but I'd probably load the cartridge with the
appendable volumes that have some space left on it.
