What i want to know is why do i get volume name as unknown? I already have defined my pools and my jobs run smoothly according to schedule. But for some reason the status message shows unknown volume always.
That's normal, unfortunately. Basically, bacula can't always know which volumes it will use next. Some reasons are that the volume to use can be overridden in the schedule, that the SD doesn't know which tapes are loaded, that the DIR didn't talk to the SD yet, and, most important, that before deciding which volumes to use pruning/recycling has to be triggered.
This is part of my bigger question :
How do you make bacula send a message before a job is run, informing the operator it needs such and such volume for the scheduled job? Since i run my jobs at night, it would be helpful to know early on(in an email message everyday) what volume bacula expects and change it before leaving if it is not in the magazine already loaded.
To my knowledge, this is not possible at the moment.
Recycling and pruning are only triggered when a new volume is actually needed, the settings in the job and schedule resources concerning pools and storage are probably only examined oncea job gets started, and job promotion adds to the confusion... I found that baculas "predictions" changed sometime between 1.36.4 and 1.36.3, but I'm not sure when it did... and it's still not very reliable.
To prevent trouble, I use a 6 cartridge autoloader with a magazine for incremental backups (there's always lots of space on the tapes), change the mag once a week for differentials (and have to juggle with those tiny DDS cartridges on only one day in a week) and send full backups to another autochanger with DLT tapes, from which full tapes are replaced when I notice them.
Arno
