Just to have something to compare with. I have an AMD Sempron 2500 with
512Mb and sending off ~206Mb/678119 files to a mysql 4.0 db takes ~40
minutes. 
I know it's less then your amount and the difference probably isn't
linear but increasing the data with 50% shouldn't change the time to 10
times longer.
One thing that I think made a difference for me was that I changed
the /etc/my.cnf to the supplied "my-large.cnf" one. Maybe something
similar can be done for Postgres.
