i'm trying to convert from AMANDA to bacula for its seemingly better
win32 client.

my backup server is RH8 (kernel v2.4.18-14) on a compaq proliant DL380 G2. as
much as i'd like to change the distro on this server- it's what compaq/hp
supports and provides rpm's to manage the system, raid, and power with.
likewise- this is a production server with no compiler or devel packages-- ergo
this machine is running bacula-1.29-2rh8.. the most recent binary rpm i could
find with a mysql backend.

HERE's my problem- symptoms to follow:
i'm trying to backup an NT4.0 SP6a client running bacula 1.36.2 but get the
following error--

31-Mar-2005 16:09 njadbsrv02: NJADBSRV02_Daily.2005-03-31_16.09.44 Fatal
error:Bad storage command: storage address=tapeserver.myhost.com port=9103

from the console on the server i can get a successful status/client from this
machine, but attempts to do a backup always get this error.

i found some past postings that reference an incompatibility btwn client/server
versions. while believable, i also wonder why there would be protocol
communication msgs changes in subversion releases- as this "Bad storage command"
error seems to imply.

i would upgrade the server to bacula-1.36 but not having a binary rpm has made
this difficult. i reluctantly installed gcc- but the large dependency list of
devel packages halted me there. thus still not able to compile my own.

i then down graded the win32 clients to 1.29 but still had no luck.

i'm really ready to retire AMANDA but have found this issue quite frustrating.
already way too much time spent debugging. :( if my $.02 counts, i would really
like to see binary packages released for the server. i under stand there are
way too many combinations of distro's / db backends to consider but it really
would benefit instances like this were compilers arent an option on production
machines.

tia for any help/advice.
