Hi everybody,
I'm working on a project to implement a centralized
backup system. ...
For example we are discussing on solution by Dell
hardware and CommVault Galaxy backup software. Another
solution comes from IBM with Tivoli storage manager.
These solutions appear robust and fit perfectly with
our company. Anyway I'm really attracted by open
source solutions like bacula. Is there anyone that can
give me any help to compare bacula system performance
with these commercial products?
That's a little hard to say without more insight into your needs.
For example, the topic of bare metal recovery was already mentioned. Then, do you prefer (or need) a HSM implementation? and lots of other things.
The few things I can answer without looking at your needs more closely, is that bacula does work reliable, can deal with the amount of data you have, and can be used to implement many different backup scedules for different hosts and / or filesets.
You do need at least one administrator who will work with bacula until he knows it quite good - the same as with any other backup solution.
Some things bacula supports not (yet) or can't really do: Using libraries with multiple tapes, migration of jobs, copying of jobs.
Unlike with, for example, TSM you can't rely on an expensive but reliable support if you run into problems.
That's the disadvantages.
Advantages: Cost, obviously, although hardware and administration are the same, independent of the solution you choose.
Development: Things you need but bacula can't do yet can probably be implemented either by you, your company, someone you pay, or even Kern if you nag him hard enough ;-)
Of course, in helping improving bacula you give something back to the community etc. bla blah. You know that already.
My suggestion: If you've got time simply try bacula, perhaps dedicate some tapes, a backup server, a drive and some time to see if it fits your needs.
If you don't have time and your management doesn't look at price tags, pay IBM.
If you don't have time and really really have to find something doing it's job without any cost at all :-) give bacula a try.
If you have lots of time and mony pay some consulting company to make your decision.

(This one for free - you can, of course, pay me to give you more detailed advice :-)
Thanks,
Gianpaolo Serafini
