We only build under Visual C++ 6, so trying to build with anything else means
you are pretty much on your own, though I don't see why Visual Studio 2003
shouldn't be essentially identical to Visual C++ 6 -- since I got my Visual
C++ 6 from the Visual Studio.net 2003 software I have.

If you follow the instructions letter by letter, step by step, you should be
able to build it. I recently updated the README while helping a developer
setup a build environment, so I know they are correct and complete.
