I've have a couple of Linksys NSLU2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2 that has Debian Lenny installed on it and just uses the stock Debian bacula packages so in terms of management it is no different to any other Debian system with bacula installed. Of course you have to be aware that USB attached storage doesn't allow access to the disk SMART data so you may not get warned about impending storage failures before it is too late. I balance this risk against the reduced power consumption and quietness of these devices. I also have a Thecus N4100+ http://www.thecus.com/products_spec.php?cid=10&pid=28&set_language=english that I use as a SD instance. Internally those devices run something close to Debian Woody and they accept modules that give you ssh shell access to the device. From that shell I used the Debian debootstrap procedure to create a Debian Woody chroot environment and build Bacula 5.0.3 against that. I had to disable a number of things like SSL support. I wouldn't exactly suggest that this is something that a general end user should attempt but it does allow me to make good use of an otherwise unused device. Note that I haven't attempted to run a director on any of these boxes. I have a separate machine that is more suited to that. > well.. anyone have any device with bacula ?? Sorry but I didn't really keep detailed setup notes over and above using the various manuals/howtos on the internet that explain how to setup the individual bits.
