Can you point me at where to find which versions are known good for  
bacula?

Yes.  It's a fact of life on FreeBSD.   Unless you use the precompiled  
versions available, but then you get whatever random dependancies the  
latest builder uses.  For example, bacula as available in binary form  
depends on sqllite3, which is not production quality for bacula.    So  
we have to compile it ourselves, etc.
