I think that Gnome 3 shell already has a very slick solution to handling workspaces from a display wall. (Which is similar to the Compiz wall). Trying to incorporate this functionality into the launcher is going to add complexity to a very simple tool. I propose:
-Take the Gnome Shell functionality for workspaces into Unity -Let the launcher only display (in the open app category) the open apps in the active workspace. That said, the launcher needs a lot of streamlining and it's weakness is what someone else earlier in this thread identified as the "moving target" issue. There is very little clarity between what is a system launcher, an open app and a user launcher. Yes, I know about the colours and the little arrows, but after weeks of use all I still see is a pretty candy strip of ever changing things. It takes effort to find what I want. Have a look at my mock up which clearly maintains a hierarchy of "System launchers", "Open Apps", "User Launchers" http://www.reviveyourpc.ie/babel We must also be conscious that multiple workspaces is going to be a computer power user feature. It is a very important feature and not to be compromised - but we cannot complicate a basic functionality to accommodate it. Ubuntu's and Unity's goal is to capture a mainstream audience. The mainstream is still unable to upgrade from IE6 and struggle to change their wallpaper in Windows (I kid you not, see it every day) - so lets keep the basics basic.
