This sounds like a good idea indeed! I like the idea of being able to have a good idea of how urgent a response is based on just looking at the applet, and having applications able to specify this. This way it could be more granular than just application; if we look at Gwibber, perhaps tweets would be green, replies would be yellow, and DMs would be red.
