Yes you need to open up the window of the program but how else you could see
your password/username? : )
E.g. a global keybinding or etc. As I see Keepassx has a function but

I've been a happy KeePassX + Awesome user on Ubuntu Natty for more than a year and its global hotkey has been working just fine. I recently set up a different machine with an ArchLinux + Awesome combo and for some reason the default global KeePassX hotkey (Ctrl-Alt-A) didn't work there. I didn't bother investigating too much - I assumed it was conflicting with another program and just changed the hotkey to something else (Ctrl-Alt-Q in my case). Works like a charm now. You might want to try that too.
