If X can't do it than awesome can't do it.

 I can see the only way if BIOS on your laptop supports changing place of
Fn key to place it where you prefered it to be (like switch with Ctrl key).
For example as I heard there is such possibility for my Thinkpad SL400 to
swap Fn and Ctrl keys.
