[Warning: I'm the head dev of obvious, so take everything I say with a
grain of salt!]

What you want to use depends on how you want to use your widgets. If you
want widgets that simply get plugged into the widgets section of a wibox
and work, use obvious. If on the other hand you want fine grained
control over what exactly is displayed in what format at the price of
slightly more code to write, you should use vicious.

What seemed to be the problem with obvious' volume control? Usually,
just sticking obvious.volume_alsa() into the widget section should do
the trick, and if that doesn't do, obvious.volume_alsa(cardid, channel)
should do it (with cardid being 0 in most cases and channel being one of
"PCM" or "Master").

I'd really like to know where we failed so I can improve the volume
widget. Was it the documentation or is the setup inconsistent or
unexpected or are there issues with code quality?
