I have avr-gcc 4.1.2, 4.2.4 and 4.3.3 installed. Checking the parts
supported by each, only the 4.3.3 version supports attiny88

I would recommend you stick with 4.3.2. It probably supports tiny88 too.
However, anything before 4.3 probably won't.
