Thanks I'll take a look. GPL is an issue, but high level concepts might not be a problem to be inspired by.

This is another very interesting Java database: http://www.mckoi.com/database/
It seems to be able to handle bigger databases than HypersonicSQL.
Although it is GPL, maybe there is something to learn from it.

I've already adapted Hypersonic to be a "second class" phoenix block, but being close to the code recognise it needs a massive refactoring.
I sure understand that. The design patterns that make up Avalon are useful only if applied since the beginning of the software design, otherwise, they look more messy than elegant and do more harm than good.
The main issue is that the original team dispanded and lost interest. The new team is carrying on, but I think there is a license issue. Copyright holders can reassign, but I think it would be difficult to contact all contributors.
Good point, besides, if you say the community is undergoing a transition and the code needs massive refactoring, there's no point in doing this.
So, you have my +1 to start this RDBMS project overhere (even if I think I lost my developer status on this project :)
