"Non-recursive make" is indeed a nice paradigm for various reasons, but if you've read earlier threads on this list, actually _implementing_ it is not quite that trivial. You're essentially using a global namespace for everything, and you've got to write your makefiles with that in mind, and it can cause some wrinkles and inconveniences.
