I'm not sure I fully understand the details of your use cases. Are these
project maintained by you or are they 3rd party projects that you
distribute? In any case, please note that my hack does not change the
behavior of Automake but only shows how to make the version-str
independent from the rest of configure.ac. Consequently, you'll need to
modify the Makefile.am in case the hack would be useful for you.
