Do you have darwinports installed?
Yes I do however, the automake that darwinports installs causes
problems with Apple's perl, of course they have a replacement perl
as well however this has problems with other Apple installed software.
If so you should be able to see if any special patches are used
against
the stock auto* tools.

It works in the darwinports nonstandard location however I can't seem
to find out how they do it since they use pre-compiled binaries and
perl scripts.
I was not able to reconfigure and build the source and have it work
since they prebuild everything and using darwinports for any custom
installation requires a degree.
