You're right, it does work now. However, what it really strange is that I don't have automake 1.4 installed at all, and my older version is 1.6.3, which also work when explicitly called. What you describes are two bugs that were present in old versions of Automake. Please look at the Automake version number at the top of the generated Makefile you mentioned. I believe you are not using Automake 1.8 as you think (it probably is Automake 1.4).
