How would that be basically different from what most Linux distributors
do these days?

i386-redhat-linux-gnu
i586-suse-linux-gnu

Essentially the main difference would be providing a distribution
version number.

But that's such a marginal detail which apparently is negligible for the
vast amount of applications to config.guess. If you really need it, you
can still obtain it in other ways (grep'ing /etc/*-release).
