I like that idea!
But then you have to choose between names and numbers.
Naming (and documenting!) that many options is hard work.
Numbers aren't as aesthetically pleasing.  Tough choice, and a
significant amount of work either way.  Maybe it's not worth it.
I'll bet that this isn't something that's likely to come up
very often, so maybe I should just patch my copy of automake.
