I don't think you looked very hard - just use the third parameter to AC_PATH_PROG. AC_ARG_VAR([SED], [path to SED]) AC_PATH_PROG([SED], [sed], [no]) if test "$SED" = "no"; then AC_MSG_ERROR([sed is required]) fi
