Well, it's something that ought to be fixed sooner rather than later.
However, since the problem has always been there and may prove difficult
to fix, you could just go ahead and get Automake 1.5 out the door and
plan this rewrite for 1.5.1 or something? 1.5 is long overdue as it is.
