I _think_ you can also use a date spec for that.
So you could ask for the version '3 weeks ago' of the project:

cvs co -D "3 weeks ago" autoconf

gets me the full tree, with the top entry in changelog Pavel's ^ escape
of 2001-03-06.

Is that what you want?
