Well, you should have seen my slightly more succinct version by now.  I'd say
check them both in, as there is some logic that says it'd be nice to be able
to notice the failure without Autoconf & Make installed and some which says
it's nice to have a test with a full follow through that might catch other
related errors in the future.

Maybe combing them makes the most sense?  As long as the `exit 77` due to
missing tools comes after the grep that terminates my test...
