Yes, it should be documented.  No, you weren't crazy.  No, this info didn't
address your real problem.  However, I mentioned it because it is an issue and
since you indirectly brought it up I thought I give warning.

It's a nuisance when the configure script doesn't work just because of a
filename that isn't useable by the system.
