Hm, okay, I'm smoking crack then.  It seems to be a problem with
my above-level makefile--the attached output was from running make
directly.  The problem seems to be running make at the top-level with
the '-e' option, which I thought I needed to override the 'DESTDIR ='
in automake'd Makefile.  I removed the '-e' and it works fine.  Now,
I hope it doesn't break everything else...  Sorry for the bogus bug
report, and thanks for your help.
