I totally understand. It would be nice to get a release out. Hell,
it would be nice to fix a bug.
I'm pretty much looking for someone interested in taking over automake
development. It is pretty clear I'm not finding the time to do it :-(

I would have too, though we have done other things about as large.
Ian implemented Automake conditionals when he automake-ified ILU a few
years ago. That was a major step in making automake suitable for
larger projects.
