I hit this problem a few months ago.  It's an unnecessary restriction
which is fixed in the CVS version of automake.

If you'd prefer not to use that you can probably work around by
building your program as "x4dim" and then fiddling with the name
before it gets installed.  I thought I used this workaround for a
while, but I'm afraid it doesn't seem to be in the CVS tree for my
project.
