Frederic asked a pointed question about it, and it turns out that is unnecessary. We don't define makedev under that name in glibc, so ignoring or not ignoring an implicit function declaration error cannot change the outcome of an autoconf check. The failure merely moves from compile stage to link stage or vice versa, which does not matter.
