Hi Eric,
although I remember having seen this (for C++) on the automake list, I am
thoroughly
puzzled, because I couldn't find anything related in c.m4 (from git).
Moreover, I just did a small test using
AC_PROG_CXX([gxx])
with no gxx in my PATH resulting in CXX=g++.
Did I miss something?
