Indeed it is!  Thanks for digging up the prior reference.

Still to be determined, then, is why some builds of bash 3.1 choke on
multiline `` command substitution, while others don't.  Although Stepan's
guess was that a buggy version of bison was used to build your particular
bash build: http://bugs.slamd64.com/show_bug.cgi?id=397
