AC_SUBST is only used to define values to be substituted by AC_OUTPUT (typically for AC_CONFIG_FILES, that is the various Makefile.in among others) http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/html_node/Setting-Output- Variables.html#index-AC_005fSUBST-989
