It looks like you're running a buggy version of M4. > Autoconf 2.59 > Automake 1.9.3 > Libtool 1.5.14 > M4 1.4.1 I would upgrade to M4 1.4.3 and then rebuild and reinstall Autoconf from scratch, using M4 1.4.3.
