So you prefer Solaris sed from /usr/xpg4/bin rather than GNU sed, which may already be first in the user's path? I'm shocked!
A more proper solution would be to test the characteristics of various sed programs on the system until the one with the required characteristics is found. Then this sed is subsituted via $SED.
