thansk a lot for the details and quick reply! I was able to fix the problems I had.
Since the dependency on config.rpath seems to come from the libiconv macros requiring gettext macros, I guess I'll just add an AM_GNU_GETTEXT, and a call to autopoint in our autogen.sh script, and let the automachinery do its work.
