Some of us are using autoconf with mixed-language projects that include Fortran code that we didn't write and that we have no intention of updating because it currently works well enough. To make things easy on the projects that are currently using the F77 autoconf macros, it would be nice if they didn't change in backwardly incmopatible ways. So I'd vote for leaving the F77 macros alone and adding some new set of macros that can support the compilers for the newer language standards. Using FC seems reasonable to me.
