Perhaps I spoke too soon? It turns out that 'fc' is the name of the (native) Fortran compiler by Convex (now HP) on the HP Exemplar SPP. http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Consulting/FAQ/Exemplar/ProgLibSoft/convex/ http://www.scripps.edu/rc/Spp/spp_compiler.html I suppose one could argue that ksh is more common than HP Exemplars, but I feel a bit guilty at taking the easy way out.
