I haven't retried since you replied, I asked Paul seperately as he had answered a question on the autoconf list before on the topic with a pretty comprehensive answer for the time, and he forwarded it to the list. Guido has some Macros on the sourceforge site to do this. Guido's macros on the GNU site appear to be incomplete and slightly dated(?), as they refer, as far as I understand it, to other macros found elsewhere. We currently test for inttypes and stdint, but cygwin doesn't have these include files (yet?). Part of the problem is I'm still learning autoconf, so was grateful for Guido's tips on M4 syntax.
